Our trip to Utah carried a surprise. Dave and I soaked up much-needed, life-giving time with our son and his family. Then our great-nephew Emmett, along with his dad, mom, and sister, showed up as well. He participated in a knife show in Salt Lake City two of the days we were there. What a fun surprise for all of us! Pictures below: the knife show and our granddaughter’s color guard competition. What’s Been On My Heart How do you use your time? Time stays fixed. It’s finite, for all of us. You can make more money or stretch the dollars you have. Read more books, make more plans, and buy more things. But time? You can’t make one simple adjustment to it. Over the last year, I’ve spent a lot of my time adjusting how I fill it, so I can create moments like the ones we enjoyed in Utah. These relationships matter. Along the way, I realized something. I haven’t used my time with much intention to connect with others. When we don’t connect with others, loneliness creeps in. We feel set aside, even depressed. God created us for relationships. That’s why we crave them. “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.” — Ephesians 5:15-17 (NLT) Dear one, as God’s image bearer, you carry his relational fingerprint. Today is his gift to you, with time to connect with someone. How will you capture this time? Something for You Follow Jesus’ example of getting away to spend time with his Father, even though others were looking for him (see Mark 1:35-37 NLT). Here’s one way to take some time for yourself: join Sylvia Tillmann of Tremendous TRE and me on Thursday, October 29, at 1:00 p.m. Central. You’ll learn simple ways to care for yourself every day and lower the stress in your body, so you sleep better and function at the capacity God designed for you. It’s free, and this time investment will yield benefits for the rest of your life. “I Know I’m Safe, So Why Do I Feel on Edge?” 🙏🏻 A Prayer for You Dear God, you are gracious and good to Reader. Each day comes as a gift from you, a chance for Reader to spend time with you and learn from you. Would you teach Reader to use the time you grant to serve others well? Help Reader grow more conscious of personal needs and set aside reasonable time to care for them, whatever they are. Bless Reader with healthy, life-giving relationships and the desire to invest more in them than in things with no eternal value. Thank you for creating Reader to need relationships, because that need reveals you to Reader. Amen. |

Thank you for your kind encouragement over the last week. Each reply to my emails about going back to school meant so much. Oh, by the way, tomorrow marks the last day of this class. Then it's on to the next one, heading toward graduation in May 2027. Dave and I are once again traveling to spend time with our family. We're enjoying the fall changes in Utah with our kids and grandkids. I'll send a few pictures next week. What’s Been On My Heart What do you do when your heart and mind argue...
My business coach keeps asking me the same question on our calls lately: what are you focused on? While this question asks me to evaluate every aspect of my business, my coach also knows I am a holistic person. I'm not a business person and a separate individual living some other life. I'm just me. What’s Been On My Heart How often do interruptions pull you out of focus? If you're honest, it's probably your own limitations doing most of the interrupting. They're loud and impossible to ignore,...
Emery and I made pretzels together on our last vacation. I love this little video of flour-dusted hands twisting dough. I stopped to grab some pictures of how the city workers keep beauty front and center, softening all the concrete and steel of the skyscrapers around us. A black planter along the street overflows with petunias and sweet potato vine, and the coleus and other flowers outside my building have exploded after all this rain and humidity. What’s Been On My Heart How often do you...
