When “Just One More” Becomes Too Much

I hope you enjoyed your Independence Day celebrations this past weekend! 🇺🇸✨

In our family, we love to double up on the fun—this year we also threw in a few birthday bashes. On the 3rd and 4th, we celebrated Dave, Emily, and Craig. 🎂🎉

I happen to love Dave’s version of “man glitter.” 😍 (If you know, you know!)

What a gift it is to celebrate him—and the life God has redeemed for us.

We’ve made plenty of messes along the way, but by God’s grace, we get to keep learning how to serve each other, love better, and adventure together in thankfulness.

Consider

Maybe during all those celebrations, you found yourself enjoying just a little too much of something. I know I did!

Isn’t it funny how we excuse our indulgence? “It’s a holiday!” we say. “It’s just one more [blank]…”—whether that’s dessert, scrolling, shopping, or that extra slice of pie.

The truth is, temptation dazzles us daily—sometimes in small ways, sometimes in ways that can carry big consequences.

I read an article recently that really made me pause. I thought you might appreciate it, too:

👉 “Bible Verses and Principles About Overcoming Temptation” - Covenant Eyes Blog

How often do we stop to see temptation through God’s eyes instead of our own excuses?

Reflect

Here are a few more verses you might sit with this week as you think about where temptation sneaks in:

  • Hebrews 3:13
  • Proverbs 4:6-7
  • James 5:16
  • 1 John 2:15-17

Over the last 20 years, I’ve learned this the hard way: I do not have enough willpower to overcome temptation on my own—no matter how stubborn I am.

It’s only when I lean fully into God’s strength, trust His ways, and walk in obedience that I find freedom from the sin that so easily trips me up. (Hebrews 12:1)

I’d love to hear from you—hit reply and share a verse that’s helped you fight temptation and stand firm in your faith.

🙏🏻 May I pray for you?

Dear God, Thank you that Reader doesn’t have to stand alone when temptation comes calling. Remind Reader today that your strength is always enough when Readers runs out. Help [Reader see the way of escape you promise, and give her courage to take it. Thank You that You are faithful and patient with Reader. Keep Reader’s heart fixed on what is good and true—because that’s where freedom lives. Amen.

Last week, I called my dear friend Linda. It’d been a while since we’d chatted. During that time, I admitted how weary I felt. Saying “weary” seemed dramatic, yet it was accurate. Weary means exhausted in strength, endurance, vigor, or freshness according to Merriam-Webster. In that weariness, God reminded me to come to him through another wise woman’s text message, which pointed me to Colossians 1:11-12 NLT We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will...

Happy Labor Day if you live in the United States. Maybe, like me, you’re realizing that summer adventures often take more energy than they give. Dave and I discovered recently that we don’t vacation very well—most of ours have something to do with work. That’s why we declared this long weekend “Unlabor Day.” A chance to step back, breathe, and simply be. And we will plan a true vacation for 2026. 😉 Stay tuned. One of the cruelest side effects of betrayal is how it attacks your identity. Even if you don’t say it out loud, you wonder: What did I do wrong? Why wasn’t I enough? Friend, I see you. And I want you to hear this clearly: His betrayal is not a reflection of your worth. Consider When someone you love breaks trust, it shakes everything—including your sense of self. You might start picking yourself apart, blaming yourself, or questioning everything about who you are. But the truth is:You didn’t...
