Betrayal doesn't stop with the marriage

My grandchildren went back to school this week. Dave started his faculty meetings today. Students will return to college campuses within the next few weeks.

Even after over 40 years, starting school in August still feels foreign to me.

Growing up, we always started after Labor Day. August still feels like summer to me, and the temperatures where we live agree.

If you live outside the United States, when does your school year start? I'd love to know.

What’s Been On My Heart

This week, my mind wandered from backpacks and schedules to something heavier: broken relationships. Betrayal doesn't stop at the marriage relationship. It ripples into our children's lives, too.

How do you tell your children the truth without turning them into a witness against their other parent? Give yourself permission to tell the truth without narrating every failure that isn't yours to expose.

"Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church." — Ephesians 4:15 (NLT)

I started this conversation on the blog this week. Read here.

Something for You

When estrangement stretches beyond a marriage into relationships with your own children, Mark Whitlock's new podcast, Hope and Help For Estranged Parents, speaks directly to that pain. Whitlock, a podcaster and marketer, built the show for parents of estranged children. Start with his Substack articles, then move into the podcast itself.

Grief from betrayal or estrangement doesn't heal on its own timeline. My new class, Breathe Again: A Healing Path, gives you the tools, language, and courage to keep moving forward, holding Jesus' hand no matter what others choose. 🙏🏻 A Prayer for You

Dear God, Life feels hard sometimes. Jesus, you understand that because the Bible tells Reader that you experienced everything Reader does when you walked this earth. Thank you for not being distant and disconnected from Reader. Bring hope and joy to Reader. Heal the damaged relationships, God. Do your work in each person involved in the brokenness. Thank you. Amen.

My girls have raved about their air fryers for years, and I just nodded along. Two people who don't eat much fried food don't need another gadget, especially in a condo with barely enough cabinet space for what we already own. Then I set off the smoke alarm heating pot stickers in a pan on the stove. Again. 🤦🏻♀️ For the bazillionth time. 🫤 Yes, that's a word. This week, I finally bought the air fryer. Dinner came out perfect in ten minutes. No oven to heat up, no alarm blaring through the...

Home. It's a beautiful word, isn't it? What images come to mind when you hear it? For me, home meant Dave and I sinking into our own bed for a few days before we jetted off to see our kids and grandkids for one more visit before the fall season begins. Four lovely days. Their pool. Family not only visible but touchable. Something our hearts needed. What’s Been On My Heart Life is an adventure. Never stop learning and growing. Over the last month, God has shown me so much about myself, about...

Alaska is beautiful, again. It's also had a few challenges, again. That's how life goes. You and I get to enjoy tremendous beauty alongside difficult circumstances, often in the same afternoon. Dave and I got home yesterday evening, tired and grateful, after thousands of miles by land and sea. God sustained us the whole way: he blew our minds with his creation, and he carried us when we had no energy left to take one more step. You'll spot some of what we saw in the photos below: an airport...
