When Everything Is Competing for Your Attention

“Baby, it’s cold outside.” 🥶

At times like this, I’m especially thankful for warm homes, steady heat, and cozy layers. It’s funny how easily we take those simple gifts for granted—until the cold really settles in.

When the sun hits freshly fallen snow, it sparkles. As a little girl, I was convinced there were diamonds scattered everywhere. ✨ I felt such wonder watching it shimmer. I couldn’t wait to get outside and play in those “diamonds”—making snow angels (I never quite mastered getting up without ruining them), building snowmen, and creating forts. It was pure joy… and the best way to burn off all that bottled-up energy.

Maybe these winter storms have you feeling a little stir-crazy, too. I get it. My plan is to bundle up and step outside for a few minutes each day. That fresh air lifts my spirit—even if snow angels and snowmen aren’t in the cards right now. ⛄

What’s Been On My Heart

Shiny objects—and learning how to recognize God’s voice in the middle of all the noise. Every day, you and I are flooded with messages: good opportunities, targeted ads, and subtle whispers that say, “You deserve this. Don’t miss out.” Sometimes I pause and wonder… Where is God’s voice in all of this?

In Matthew 6, Jesus speaks right into this tension and reminds us, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Lately, I’ve been waiting on God’s direction about an opportunity that looks good on paper. And if I’m honest, I’ve struggled with patience. I’ve questioned what I’m hearing. I’ve wondered if it’s Him—or just my own desires talking.

But I’m learning this: when I quiet the noise and choose to trust instead of rush, God is faithful to answer. And often, His answer isn’t about the opportunity at all. It’s about what I truly need.

Something for You

  1. Last week, I sent you a resource from Colleen Stewart, “3-Step Guide to Overcome the Effects of Trauma.” Did you get a chance to download it? If not, here’s the link again.
  2. You might find yourself looking for employment options right now due to various circumstances. Check out this resource from my friend Amanda Gustafson who supports unconventional people (like us) going from “I’m in the wrong place” to “I belong” in new career directions. Today, the job application game is mechanical and full of rejection. Amanda’s focus on building connections is organic and full of possibilities. My mom used to tell me that March and April were hard months for her. Growing up in northern Minnesota, I watched the beautiful white snow turn muddy and black. What once sparkled now tracked a mushy mess into the house with every person who walked through the door. Add in the temps that could not make up their mind, and life felt a bit more chaotic than the predictable quiet of winter cold. This year, I get Mom’s feelings more than ever. The seasonal switches feel unsettling. So when the sun...

The best birthday gifts I received were not wrapped—they were phone calls and special texts from my children and grandchildren. Oh, my heart. 💛 Dave took me out for a gluten-free doughnut and a chai latte, then we walked to Lake Michigan to soak up some sunshine. ☕️ Even with Chicago traffic humming all around us, my soul just… revived. I found myself marveling at God’s goodness and kindness all over again. I get to experience all of this. What a gift. What’s Been On My Heart “You keep track...

This time of year, I feel like a kid looking through the candy store window. Spring is on its way — crocuses, daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths are poking through the thawing ground as I walk down the city streets. The air feels a little different… until the wind blows off the still-cold Lake Michigan. I love springtime. It feels like a gift every year. Oh — and It'Sugar, a massive candy store, is only a couple of blocks away. Very dangerous. 😉 What’s Been On My Heart Just like the promise of...
